This kind of thing just strikes me as so 90s (and not in the good retro way). Both the student, who should get over himself, and Hirst, who surely has better things to do with his millions, are engaging in what is a pretty tired game here, particularly when Hirst has already won this kind of battle in the early 90s (when it was still cool) when Mark Bridger walked in to the Serpentine gallery and poured black ink into the tank of one of Hirst's Away from the Flock pieces, and retitled the work Black Sheep. He was subsequently prosecuted, at Hirst's wish, and was given two years' probation. Even then, I felt that Hirst's response showed a certain lack of a sense of humour, but this really seems ridiculous:

Some obnoxious art student stole your crayons. Get over it.

What IS really worrying about this actually, is the claim that Hirst was preventing said obnoxious student from using images of For the Love of God in his collages. C’mon Damien, we were all on your side with the whole Hymn debacle [http://www.guardian.co.uk/uk/2000/may/19/claredyer1] And whatever happened to appropriation, which is really the cornerstone of collage, and contemporary art, anyway?

Basically, threatening a young artist who appropriates some of your work is just really bad form.

About Mixtape

Mixtape is a blog run (loosely) by Linda Stupart as a manifestation of a project in which she collaborates with a large group of smart, interesting, wonderful cultural producers. As such, Mixtape documents these collaborations. More than that, though, the blog serves as a space for each member of the project to post whatever they like: Tell us what they’re making, thinking, doing or, even, feeling. The blog also forms a space for Linda, a Cape Town based critic, artist, feminist, WWE fan and cultural commentator, to post her writing.
