Spier Infecting the City

Call for participants

The Festival:

Spier Infecting the City is an exciting festival aimed at bringing the performing arts right into the heart of the Mother City. It features performances by local and international artists at a number of locations in the city bowl, including the Grand Parade, Church Square and Thibault Square.

Quiet Emergency:

Will be performed in Thibault Square, it is a ritual of rebirth whose theme is Creating the Future out of the Present. Centered on giving a voice to the voiceless and challenging community divisions, the performance is a coming together for all the people of the city so that we can transcend the barrier between us.

This performance requires over 50 participants. This is an amazing opportunity to help an exciting festival cement itself as part of the Cape Town cultural calendar, to meet other people who are passionate about art and performance and to get involved with the issues of the Mother City.

This project is a collaboration between Margie MacKay, Gilbert Douglas and Anthea Moys.

Dates

Workshops and rehearsals from the beginning of February, streamed according groups.

Full rehearsals with the whole cast from 11th of February.

Performances from the opening Saturday the 13th, then twice daily Monday to Friday, and a final performance on Saturday the 20th.

Who we need

We are looking for enthusiastic volunteers to be performers and coordinators. The performance will involve around 70 people and will need dancers, singers, musicians, performers and people just willing to be present and participate. We need people of all shapes, sizes colours and ages.

If you are interested please send me your full contact details, any special skills and how you’d like to be involved.

Briefing meetings for new volunteers will take place next week at 10.30am, with another at 4.30pm Monday 25th and a third at 10.30 on Tuesday. Why not attend and see what it's about?

Remuneration

Participation is entirely volunteer based, but daily provisions will be made for travel and refreshments.

I went to the Spier Infecting the City meeting at the Obs Community centre and had great fun. I met Margie Mackay http://www.margiemackay.com/ (Australian) and Anthea (South African) who are planning a massive week long clearing and unifing ceremony in Thibault Square, from 13th - 22nd Feb. Involving fire, movement and lots more.

Margie and Anthea took a group of us through a session of expression through movments in space, using entrances and exits.

They will be having introductory meeting for the rest of the week, I highly recomend it.

In my Visual Art capacity I offered to go to second hand clothing stores and look for red clothes. If any one want to join me just let me know.

About Mixtape

Mixtape is a blog run (loosely) by Linda Stupart as a manifestation of a project in which she collaborates with a large group of smart, interesting, wonderful cultural producers. As such, Mixtape documents these collaborations. More than that, though, the blog serves as a space for each member of the project to post whatever they like: Tell us what they’re making, thinking, doing or, even, feeling. The blog also forms a space for Linda, a Cape Town based critic, artist, feminist, WWE fan and cultural commentator, to post her writing.
